Celebrating The Life & Legacy...
To celebrate the life & legacy of the legendary Cuban sonero I share with you this montage made of 3 different images (2 photos and a tour poster) showing the three good friends Ibrahim Ferrer, Omara Portuondo & Ruben Gonzales together on a balcony draped with a tour banner of Ferrer's show & also having a larger-than-life b&w framed photo of the three of them in the wall behind them.
Pour célébrer la vie et le legs du fabeleux sonero cubain, je partage avec vous ce montage fait de 3 images différentes (2 photos et un fichier du tour) qui fête les trois bons amis Ibrahim Ferrer, Omara Portuondo & Ruben Gonzales, tous ensemble sur un balcon doté d’une banderole d’un concert tour de Ferrer et aussi au dernier plan, une photo de ces trois en grande format encadrée.
Always the humble, soft-spoken & warm person that he was, Ibrahim Ferrera realized his life-long desire of getting his due credit recognized when the self-titled "Buena Vista Social Club" album won them a Grammy in 1997. With the platinum-selling 1999's "Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer", he took home the 2000 Latin Gammy for best new artist, an album he recorded at 70 yrs of age:)! Shortly after, his "Buenos Hermanos," won a Grammy for best traditional tropical Latin album in 2004. Truly impressive and a big inspiration to all!
Toujours homble, doux et chaleureux, Ibrahim Ferrer voit ses efforts reconnus quand l’album "Buena Vista Social Club" leur apporte un Grammy en 1997. Et il rapporte en 2000 un Latin Grammy pour meilleur nouveau artiste avec l’album de 1999-"Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer”, qu’il avait enregistré l’âge de 70 ans:)! I woke up this morning to the news that the incredibly talented Cuban crooner Ibrahim Ferrer has left us. Although I had planned to but never got to meet him, I know I will feel the loss for a long time since I always admired his talent and the wonderful music he made with his genius of a group the Buena Vista Social Club. Ferrer, the entire Buena Vista ensemble, and the late Celia Cruz, have among many other factors always been a great inspiration to my desire to soon go live in Cuba. I have blogged, written & talked about this and all who know me well know I've been serious about it since my mid-teens.

I am currently working on a tribute image as well as the text in French. For now these few words & images of Ferrer & his close song-bird friends Ruben Gonzales & Omara Portuondo should keep the candle burning. (EDIT: New pics & tribute posted above)

Moi aussi j’ai été ébahi des nouvelles. Sage et talenteux ce charmant Ibrahim Ferrer. Tu me disais toujours>>>il a sans doute “l’air d'un vieux copain, un vrai sapeur". Je reverrai le film aujourd’hui même. L’hommage, ja'dore ca et ouais on attend les pics que tu fais copain.

a great fan of the BVSC for a long while now , loved his exploits on the '97 BVSC release with Ry Cooder and enjoyed the follow up BVSC presents Ibrahim Ferrer.

AND you better have space in that suitcase for me (when you go to Cuba)! I've always thought it is a magical place and Havana is a must see place for me!

Never heard of the man either but this is a lovely way to be remembered; the only thing that lives on after us is memory.
Shall make a point of listening to him and Havana here I come.
RIP Ibrahim Ferrer! I am with the gals on not knowing him, but will check him out and see what you saw, Akiey and Maitha - you dudes have got your musical tastes sorted!

Oh no, akiey! This is so sad! He was planning to perform here in London in October and I was really looking forward to that show. I cannot believe this.
@ Aimée, hola “Chiquita”:)! Merci tant, l’image c’est prèsque fini et je compte le poster dans deux jours. Ouais, c’est dommage qu’Ibrahim Ferrer nous a quitté. Le film, c’est à voir. Un vrai “must see” quoi?! Bisous et…calins,lol!
@ Mitouffée, grazie pour ta parole, toujours sympa:) L’émission Buena Vista Social Club je l’ai vu deux fois sur IFC et une fois sur PBS et je regrette ne pas l’avoir enregistré. Y a une copine en Allemagne avec laquelle j’ai suivi le film sur PBS, elle m’a rappellé qu’on pourrait le film de la chaîne elle même. R.I.P Ibrahim Ferrer.
@ Maitha, very true, the Roy Cooder release is a classic reflection of what real musical passion can do to a person or group dedicated to their craft. Nice to note you too are a long-time fan of BVSC & the musical talent that is Ibrahim Ferrer. He’ll truly be missed, and so will Ruben Gonzales & Compay Segundo. R.I.P.
@ Poi, Cuba, the wonderful nation & it’s warm-hearted people has been kept out of the global “mainstream” (whatever this means anymore) media largely due to political differences with some powerful, media-oriented nation..:( that may be the reason you didn’t get to know/hear much about Ferrer & his BVSC.
I highly recommend the Buena Vista Social Club movie by Will Wenders, it’s a very nice movie-documentary & you’ll feel a connection with Ferrer, Segundo, Gonzales (best pianist in Central & Southern America), the entire BVSC & definitely Cuba & it’s people.
You're right about many Cubans being "good peoples":)

No way am ever leaving our favorite Ms.K behind. We’ll give you the front seat in the maroon 1964 Chevrolet convertible as we all cruise around Havana & out to Santiago as well.

@ Guess, How’s you babe!? Ferrer’s music is wonderful, whether you understand Spanish or not, it takes you to Havana & back and leaves a broad smile on your face. Am sure you know the formula by now: get the music, watch the movie then you’ll see what Maitha, Mshairi & akiey see in Ferrer, BVSC & Cuban music in general.
The pics? Thanks, you know am a visual kind of person. Would be better if he could see the photomontage I have planned for him.
@ Mshairi, I really do feel your loss & I know you would have done everything to see him in concert. He was just a couple of weeks away from his London dates. It’s reported he fell ill in the course of the European tour:(. R.I.P Ferrer.

I forgot to say - this is an excellent tribute, akiey. Thanks for keeping Ibrahim Ferrer in our hearts. I have been listening to some of his music since I read your post. His voice was so wonderful and it was difficult to believe he was over 70 when he sung Dos Gardenias. Aii candela!
@ mshairi, thanks a lot, & always for your kind words:) I wanted to celebrate his life insteading of mourning [check new post:)] & nice to see we have similar tastes in music:) I've been playing BVSC & Ferrer's music most evening & yes, Candela, full of energy & a masterpiece. I love it!
-Doesn't his doing so much at 70+yrs old answer the Qs we've all had chez Blue Poet:)?
I love this mand's voice! He was wonderful, you can't imagine that at he's age he'd have pipes in that condition, this guy could sing... And the old Cuban ballards are wonderful.
