Jamerikenia, the latest offering from our Niteshift imprint is now available for free download (yes... gratis!, bure!, gratuit, sin dinero! ).

This high-energy, summer fun, "get ur party & BBQ started" anthem was initially set to appear on the soundtrack for a documentary project we scheduled for mid-summer 07. It has received an unexpectedly good vybe from fellow media/music heads since it's Wed April 4th, 2007 Internet debut and it's now yours to listen to, download and share as many copies as you want with your fam & friends.

The title "Jamerikenia" is a familiar play of words denoting the national origins of these awe-inspiring artists & the track's producer i.e: Jamaica, America (USA), Kenya (Kenia in Italiano). kardinal Offishall is of dual Jamaican-Canadian nationality thus the note about the 4 countries.

Just doing the usual as I burn the midnite oil working on a project and looking forward to K'naan-Stephen Marley-Damian Marley bringing the house down at C-town's House of Blues in March as well as Nas' concert 2 days later at the same venue. Until then...we'll keep making that good music & "we'll sing our own song' (UB40), lol!

This will remain here for just a couple days.

Yep, we've been keeping pretty busy the past couple extended weeks and it's good to see it's been worth the effort. Greater strides made this month with more expansion into some new & little-tried avenues in this fast-growing multimedia field by concluding several endorsement agreements some of which we will feature in the various media houses thanks to CM, the new face of The Niteshift's akiey5Gallery. who will feature in a wide variety of our print, video & digital spots. The UK, which created the Palestinian-Israeli problem after WW2 acts aloof about all this...anyway, what's new about that!?

The world watches in pain & wonder as Lebanon, Israel & Palestine are being played like pawns while the two main players in the conflict wait around like vultures. If the international community does not act fast enough then in a matter of weeks we will have another Rwanda, Cambodia or Sajarevo. We never seem to learn from our mistakes.
Until we find a lasting solution the world has to put up with lots of sh*t!

In the US we need to stop whinning like woosies always lamenting about gas prices whenever there's a conflict around the world. People are dying, maimed for life and families torn apart, worrying about gas prices is too darned stupid, selfish & 'effing Ish!!

Under The Light

Following closely on the heels of Maarifa, Tafsiri marks its 1st blog anniversary today January 30,'06 with a collage I named Under The Light to refer to the party-like atmosphere in which we'd find ourselves party till yaaawn as we celebrate this day.
The collage is made up of 30 photos I have worked on and used on a variety of posts on this blog over the past one year.
Publishing in two languages has been an enjoyable experience that allows me to think, dream, interact and visualize the world from a global e-traveller's perspective. Now if only I had the words to fully describe the good that doing so in several languages does to a person...until I do I will use pics & posts.
I toast this 1st anniversary to:
-Regular visitors to this blog & especially those that urged me to transform it from an all-French blog and go bilingual. "Merci beaucoup!".
-All my teachers of French and other Foreign languages- all of them very intelligent, gifted & an inspiration in their own special ways. I am because you are :)
-Every friend who taught me even if it was one phrase in a new language...trust me I do not forget languages so let's speak in your lingo when we next meet:)
-Everyone who I have taught a foreign language, be they young or old(er). It's through teaching other that we become true masters of our crafts:)
-My siblings for seeing it worth following my footsteps & each one of them studying a foreign language and for all of them being fluent speakers of French as well. You shock & me very proud of you. Comment se fait-il cela chez nous, hein?LOL!

2ndly: am happy to announce that there's a guest post coming up shortly from a regular visitor to this blog and I also have vacancies for two more guest writers; one for Maarifa & the other for Tafsiri. If interested drop me a line (email/IM etc) . There are no strict rules basically, feel free to write & say any & everything you'd like so long as the post is accompanied by a pic of your choice or we can work together on a pic we both agree on.

Suite a la fete de Maarifa, Tafsiri fete aujourdhui son 1er anniversaire de blog aujourd’hui janvier 30, ’06 avec un collage que nomme Sous la Lumiere comme hommage a l’ambiance feriere qu’on aura en train de feter ce jour-ci.

Due to some technical glitches on the new site, I've had to move all content and links as well your wonderful comments to Tafsiri as I wait for moderators at Afrikblog.com figure out some issues that limited effective use of that wonderful site I am building. So for now Tafsiri will be the temp home of the new site.

NB: Tafsiri will continue to serve its intended purpose of being a mulitifaceted, bilingual blog with photos, videos and also have room for other digital multimedia I create.

Here We Go!

The fabulous songbird Vondra Harris belting out her one of a kind backup vocals for my homeboy Blitz during his farewell concert in town. Lucky brats we all are:)!

Chops For Days

Today is the 8th straight day since I started using chopsticks for 90% of my meals at home & whenever I eat out at Chinese joints. It all started that other Friday nite when together with T-joy(ful) , Matt & Wei we treated ourselves to a sumptous, one of a kind buffet at the finest Chinese buffet in town. Ok, my delicacy was courtesy of T-joy(ful) who was giving me a treat:)
King's Buffet might as well pay me in food for this free promotion am doing for them,lol!

We had an impromptu dinner the other day after we'd spent early evening playing a wild game of cards in the dining room. Ofcourse I suck big time at card games but I somehow managed to come out with one win. To cap off a great evening, four of us decided to make some magic in the kitchen & part of the result was this: (post still in progress..more English & French text coming) If you'd like, guess what meat we cooked in this stew, get it right & I will do/give you a photo to use on your blog:)

Here's another one of those dinner time insanities we get into when friends come visiting. Here's a couple of them having too much fun after getting more than two helpings of home-made biryani & other goodies. I hope this serves as a reminder that no matter how crazy & fun the situation is, somebody always has to foot the bill:)

Voilà encore une des folies dans lesquelles on s’engage lors du diner avec des amis chez moi. Voici donc les quelques amis qui s’amusent trop après avoir pris plus deux assiettes de biryani et d’autres amuse-gueules fait à la maison. J’espère bien que cela sert comme rappel que n’importe la folie et le plaisir marrant de la situation, il faut toujours payer la note:)

Grief: La, Al, Ms:Hurricane Katrina

I have no words to express the grief & sorrow from the destruction & loss of life following Hurricane Katrina's sweep through Louisiana & Alabama & Mississippi. My sympathies go to all affected.
And, fellow US-residents, please let's stop the freaking whining about gas prices & instead go out to help restore faith & lives in the affected areas. For heaven's sake people are dying every day & the stupid ass-holes in the media still have the nerve to complain about gas prices!?
Shame on you!

With the platinum-selling 1999's "Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer", he took home the 2000 Latin Gammy for best new artist, an album he recorded at 70 yrs of age:)! Shortly after, his "Buenos Hermanos," won a Grammy for best traditional tropical Latin album in 2004. Truly impressive and a big inspiration to all!

I woke up this morning to the news that the incredibly talented Cuban crooner Ibrahim Ferrer has left us. Although I had planned to but never got to meet him, I know I will feel the loss for a long time since I always admired his talent and the wonderful music he made with his genius of a group the Buena Vista Social Club. Ferrer, the entire Buena Vista ensemble, and the late Celia Cruz, have among many other factors always been a great inspiration to my desire to soon go live in Cuba. I have blogged, written & talked about this and all who know me well know I've been serious about it since my mid-teens.

I am currently working on a tribute image as well as the text in French. For now these few words & images of Ferrer & his close song-bird friends Ruben Gonzales & Omara Portuondo should keep the candle burning. (EDIT: New pics & tribute posted above)

…late at night staring in wonder at some all of a sudden appealing things I rarely notice in the house & I can’t help questioning whether they’ve always been that way or if it’s just me looking at them differently at that moment.
-This chandelier has been here for as long as I’ve lived in this apartment but I suddenly appreciate it more.

…tard dans la nuit dans la maison, les yeux fixes d’un regarde inquisiteur sur des choses qui tout à coup apparaissent attirantes, les mêmes que je ne remarque pas toujours et je ne cesse qu'à me demander si elles étaient toujours belles ou si c’est différent ce coup d’oeil que je jette.
-Cette lampe luminieuse se trouve toujours dans mon apartement mais je l’apprécierai advantage d’ici.

Tao Paths to Long Life by Solala Tower. A book with teachings from the ancient wisdom of Tao that are “an ideal companion on the path to long life.”
-Five books that mean a lot to you?
1) The 3 holy books of the Jews, Christians & Muslims. If only humankind read them & followed accordingly…
2) This book of life thatI read daily. Still a work in progress & collaborating with the Exec. Editor has been a very interesting process.
3) La Femme Fardée by Françoise Sagan. Was the 1st French novel I read and liked immensly. Was young but liked it a lot;
4) Personal Diaries I have kept for nearly 17 yrs. Have carried with me every where I go for extended periods. Many fantabulous happenings of my life are recorded in there;
5) Roots by Alex Haley. Book that inspired the Tv series & mini-movies, It’s the most elaborate account of Africans’ journey from the Motherland, the Middle Passage & all the way to the New World-America.
-Last book(s) you've read?
Frida, a biography of Frida Kahlo, by Hayden Herrera. It took me 2 summers to read it but am glad I did so now I can watch the movie this week:)

This Movie Tag was passed on by wg-K and as expected I share mine & pass it on to the 5 victims at the bottom of this post. Grrrrrr, hahaha!!

1. Total number of films I own on dvd/video: At least 35 DVDs and 5 videos. Only 2 videos taped from Tv, the rest original copies. Just like my music, I have no bootlegs or downloads---I oppose illegal downloads (theft) for anyone living in N. America.
2. The last film I bought: Ray, 2 weeks before the Oscars.
3.The last film I watched:
At the movies: Crash (amazing, must-see movie. Best I’ve seen this year. Terrence Howard, Don Cheadle & Larenz Tate were amazing! Am sure they’ll get at least 2 awards this yr)
-On Tv, last evening: Faith of My Fathers : The Story of Senator John McCain as a POW in Vietnam. Very moving story. Like wg-k, will add a few movies I plan on watching soon:
*At the theatre: Hustle & Flow opening late June (another great one starring Terrence Howard & Ludacris)
*On Tv or at home: Sometimes in April, as is highly recommended here by my friend Wanjiru. She admits it’s a masterpiece in the same calibre as Hotel Rwanda.
Not a movie, but more of the Kojak Tv series starring & produced by the incredible Ving Rhames (Sundays 11pm on USA Network)

4.Five films that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me: am more into music than movies but will try:)
· Malcolm X, Denzel brought the civil rights leader to life in ways I couldn’t ever imagine. Props to him, the entire cast & Spike Lee for keeping it very real (like it so much have both tape & DVD).
· Ray…what’s not to say about Jamie Foxx's masterpiece of a performance that brought the great Ray Charles Robinson to life!? The whole cast including Regina King, Larenz Tate (am a big fan!) as the young Quincy Jones, Clifton Powell, et al was just perfect. Taylor Hackford (director) did this movie the justice it deserves.
· Tupac Resurrection: There’s very little my siblings & I don’t know about the Man, the Myth & the Legend but this movie brings out the often ignored human side of Amaru Shakur. It successfully highlights his deep spiritual, emotional, and intellectual side that makes him a world-renowned figure. Forget the F-word in his music, don’t crucify him for using it on his detractors (I know I could do worse to mine). Listen to the profound, life-changing & uplifting message in his lyrics & poetry. Props to his mom Afeni & MTV’s Lauren Lazin for a job well done.

· Amistad: I am passionate about all things to do with slavery & the slave trade. This is more than a movie to me. It’s a look at human, racial relations & the prejudice that comes with them. The good & bad sides of Black & White and what should be done to harmonize relations…more than 500 yrs since the inhuman trade flourished. Plus, “Gives us free” always cracks me up:)!!
· Casino: Robert Deniro & Joe Pesci are among my most fav actors & they do a great job alongside Sharon Stone in personifying the main players in the events that led to turning Las Vegas into the “gaming capital of the world”. Many of life’s lessons in this movie too.
· Am a big fan of Mob movies, books & docudramas. Blame that on reading Mario Puzzo’s The Godfather, & The Sicilian at 14yrs old, and by 17 yrs old had twice read The Valachi Papers, The True Confessions of a Mob Leader & The Stiletto.

5. Tag five people and have them put this in their journal: The tag came as a surprise to me but I kinda enjoyed doing it. Hope the following don’t mind keeping it going.... so I will tag Maitha, Wanjiru, Afromusing, Adrian and Guessaurus. Enjoy & Chako!

This just in: Thanks to a prompt from my friend Wanjiru [another great fun & well-wisher of Dave's:)], Dave Chappelle actually decided to head to the Motherland to get away from all the pressures & misdirection him & his one of a kind show are being put through. What a relief!! (May 16/05)
And more updates: Kudos to blogfriend Afromusing who just sent in a detailed Time Magazine article with photo of Dave in S. Africa where he talks at length about the on-going speculation. (May/17/05)

Y a eu jusqu'ici autant de versions que de soucis à propos de ta disparition à la télé -malgré le début de la nouvelle saison sans toi Grand Rigolo. Mais depuis qu'il nous est arrivé cette semaine que tu cherches à resourdre en Afrique du Sud tel que soit des petits problèmes (on l'espère bien) de la santé... nous nous enquétons davantage et ainsi on te souhaite une guérison rapide car: c'est toi qui nous emmènes et nous gardes à Comedy Central. Ton show, ça rigole, ça rigole!!et sans toi, il chie enorménent à la télé!

J'y Passerai de Beaux Jours

J'ai toujours voulu aller passer quelques années à Cuba pour pouvoir goûter la jouissance de la vie quotidienne, ses peuples, la danse et la musique et tout ce que offre la diversité immense de sa culture. Pour faire d'achats aux souvenirs au "Mercado de Artesania", faire promenade toute en admirant l'architecte des beaux immeubles et le plus fascinant.... rouler un cabriolet bleu foncé ou marron le long etendu du El Malecòn (cela je dois faire avant mon deces!!).
Un beau jour... et ainsi soit-il :)
NB: Le peu que j’ai pu goûter l'aventure El Malecòn c’est en conduisant le long de Lighthouse Drive à Mombasa et sur Lakeshore Drive à Chicago.

Living in Cuba for a couple of years has been on my to-do-list for many years and I soon hope to have a chance to savor the true essence of it's everyday life while living among it's people. To experience their music & dance and all that brings out the great diversity in their culture; to go souvenir hunting at the "Mercado de Artesania"; take a walk & admire the architecture of the beautiful buildings; and the most exciting of all... take a drive in a dark blue or burgundy convertible on the expansive length of El Malecòn (this I gotta do before I die!).
One fine day... for shiggidy:))!

PS: The closest I've come to living the El Malecòn adventure is driving along Mombasa's Lighthouse Drive (it has some official name we don't use) and Chicago's Lakeshore Drive.

Il me fascine tant la manière dans laquelle le photographe a redigé l'image en teint du sable autant que son choix de titre--un jeux-de-mots sur Mount Rushmore aux Etats-Unis. On a l'impréssion que ces deux hommes qui se trouvaient à l'autostop en dehors des bouquinistes Barnes & Noble, étaient battus ou même "enpoudrés" d'une vague forte de sable...

Une vague de sable qui, heuresement, n'a presque point déformé leurs forme physique...constatez le visage, le chapeau, aussi que la moustache chez l'homme à droit, et les cheveux toujours bien péignés, les rides au visage et les lunettes chez l'homme à gauche:) ...aussi que l'expréssion de refléction forte à gauche et celle de "phew, c'est fini la journée" à droit. Cette image je trouve très classique.

Je viens juste de fabriquer cette tasse, forme et peindre... tout cela comme dédicace à ma belle ville natale, le lieu qui m'a rendu tout le bonheur que j'ai pu connaitre. A ses peuples, les plus gentils, les plus heureux que j'ai jamais connu, ceux qui me rendent tous et toutes fièr d'être natif d'un endroit doué de gens dont la culture, la gastronomie, le climat, et le paysage est aussi beau et interéssant.

Comme je l'indique sur la tasse, "Mombasa Yapapasa" , ouaaaaiiiiis...une fois là, la belleza de la città te fait des calins très tendres:))!

Celle-ci c'est sans doute l'une des plus favs photos que j'ai jamais eu l'occasion de faire. Je les ai 'captées' récemment lors d'un dîner chez moi [ouais, je sais bien faire la gastronomie:)].
Je n'arrive pas encore à comprendre pourquoi mais il y a quelquechose dans cette image là qui me tient fort. 'Sais pas, il est soit des couleurs variées, soit le look des personnages ou...ben, je sais vraiment pas mais l'image, elle fait partie de mon chef d'oeuvre perso et je l'adore tant:)

Moi, qui n'aime pas trop dormir passerais certainement des jours et des nuits sans cesse renfermé dans la chambre, (si j'en avais une pareille, Clin!) et je ferais tout là dedans: bosser, boeuffer, bloguer, bosser, biser, baiser, briquer, m'baigner, ...tout! je craque quoi!!!!lol.

C'est rigolo mais, comment peut-on avoir de cauchemars une fois reposé ici?

Mais pas de blagues, c'est magnifique comme pièce et j'adore beaucoup mieux les meubles, ok...ces meubles, l'on parle du lit, ses drapes et les couleurs, non?. ça j'adore et à cause de cela je me comblerais de tout sommeil "des années, des années" dans un confort sans pareil.

I have very fond memories of this place. Loved it when I visited the UK & my cousin (RIP) gave me an indepth city tour of London- lasted several days & I loved every little bit of it. We would use Harrods as our start & finish point:)

Chicago, ma ville la plus favorite aux USA et voici la raison pourquoi...l'adorable Lakeshore Drive, ma partie favorite de cette ville tant de lumière et de spéctacle (forget the windy cold).
Je ferais tout pour aller re-conduire le long de Lakeshore Drive au bord du Lac Michigan dans la nuit.

Je me souviens d'un été formidable passé dans la ville avec des copains et copines très vifs! On a roulé tard dans la nuit la longuère entière de ce boulevard de rêves dans une camionnette à passagers Chevy Astro verte-et-or louée en Ohio :)!

Comme il est toujours époustoflant de glisser entre les les gratte-ciels luminieux et de l'eau du Lac immense; le lac qui comme un miroir fait peindre la refléction de la ville plein de lumière. Quel delice!!

Je viens juste de capter un lien pour un poste que j'avais fait dans mon blog anglais. Il s'agit d'encore un autre trajet qu'on avait fait avec des amis dans cette belle ville. Voici:

J'aurais evidemment tant de bonnes choses à dire à propos de cette photo mais je laisse filer l'imagination quoi, lol!?... ou peut-être pas.

En tout cas, j'ai vachement aimé le 'message' que je tiens de ces deux personnages dans cette photo pris au Soudan.
J'adore voir pratiquer les gestes de gentillesse, la cordialité, aussi que la douceur, envers l'un l'autre et ces deux là le manifestent aussi dans leur look que dans leur comportement.
N'importe qu'ils soit des amants ou non, mais bravo si ils le sont car c'est tellement kool voir le mec qui se balade à l'aise pendant que la fille, toute gaie et souriante jouit le promenade à cheval!! Voilà "le retour de Kool"!

Quel joie, quelle tranquilité!? L'hiver, je l'aime pas trop mais il apporte une sérénité certaine!

Ça fait déjà très longtemps depuis mon dernier post. Ouais...comme j’avais un tas de trucs à ranger en tête. C’est Ça la vie, il y a des hauts et il y a des bas. Ben, cette image m’a rendu une calme là que tentait à m’échapper il y a quelques jours. C’était à cause des quelques ennuis ici et là et...et... patati et patata, mais tout cela c'est maintenant le moindre de mes soucis. ¿Así es la vida, non?

"Dinner Rush" formidable comme film!

Dimanche dernier j’ai vu un très bon filme sur IFC (Independent Film Channel, 550 sur Direct Tv). “Dinner Rush”, le filme du cinéaste Bob Giraldi avec Danny Aiello, Edoardo Ballerini, Kirk Acevedo, Mike McGlone ,Vivian Wu (liste complète des personnages) est sans doute…chouette et un must!
Il s’agit de Louis (Danny Aiello), un propriétaire d’un bistrot élégant et classieux dans le quartier New Yorkais de TriBeCa, qui se fait taquiner par deux gangstars nommés Black et Blue. Ces deux derniers avaient fusillé son partenaire de business et ont maintenant comme but de lui arracher son business à cause des dettes issuant de leurs rapports financiers avec l’incontrolable fils Duncan, ici incarné par Kirk Acevedo...[clicquez "comments" pour en savoir davantage. C’est un essaie de ce nouveau blog que je viens just d’établir sur blogspot.com. Je compte le faire quasi entièrement en français et bien que j’avais déjà posté cet article ci-dessus dans mon autre blog, le fait que je l’avais écrit en français ne me permet-il pas de le représenter ici…en français…?
